Monthly Estimated Energy Bill To Be Cancelled

In europe, energy suppliers estimate how much gas and electricity you’re going to use and charge consumers a fixed advance payment every month. At the end of the year, consumers will receive an annual bill based on what they really have spent. This is about to be changed. The European Commission came up with the idea to make consumers postpay every month on how much they really used. The idea behind it is to make consumers more aware of how much they spend.

Seasonal troubles

One problem with the idea is that the winters will get very expensive. It will ask a great discipline especially in northern-europe countries to save money for the winters. On the other hand however, at the moment, if the estimated amount is too low, a high bill will come as a painful suprise at the end of the year.

Administrative troubles

One can guess that administring energy usage will get cumbersome, checking the meters every month and sending it to the energy supplier. Smart energy meters will come to the rescue here, but, even in 2015, smart meters aren’t going to be in every building. Also for the energy suppliers, the extra administrative rut will have to be paid, and it’s not going to be the supplier.
